Many of you tried my 3 ingredient avocado brownies. At first hesitant to put avocado in desserts, you seemed to enjoy quite a lot. Well, I had to come up with something similar.

Summer has yet to begin, and it’s already scorching hot here in Spain. So why not a quick and easy recipe that doesn’t require cooking? Let’s enter this super creamy chocolate avocado mousse.

Or let’s call it my latest obsession. I prep it every time I have some leftover avocados going soft because…it’s addictive. I also made it for my guests last night, and no one could spot the secret ingredient!

Healthy avocado chocolate mousse

But first…why add avocado to chocolate mousse?

It’s all about the healthy fats. Avocados make your mousse rich, creamy, and silky smooth. Without heavy cream.

This “superfood” is packed with monounsaturated fats that support heart health. It also brings fiber, vitamins (like K, E, C, and B), and barely any sugar, which makes it great for low-carb or keto diets.

In this recipe, we blend avocado with cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla. A dollop of Greek yogurt adds creaminess and a protein boost. The result is a delicious dessert: good for your cravings, good for your health!

Ingredients

This recipe has just a handful of ingredients, you probably have everything at home. Here are more details, and you can find precise quantities in the recipe card at the bottom.

Chocolate avocado mousse ingredients – Ripe avocados, Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, pinch of salt
  • Avocado – You’ll need 2 ripe avocados of medium size, I recommend Hass. To check for perfect ripeness, gently press the fruits with your fingers. They should slightly soft.
  • Greek yogurt – It adds a creamy texture and protein. For richness, use 5% Greek yogurt, but also 2% fat and nonfat work. As an alternative, replace with soy yogurt, coconut yogurt, coconut cream, or whipped cottage cheese.
  • Cocoa powder – Use unsweetened cocoa powder. Raw cocoa, Dutch cocoa powder and chocolate protein powder are great replacements.
  • Maple syrup – It adds sweetness without refined sugar. Replace with honey, agave, date syrup, or keto sweeteners like monk fruit or stevia.
  • Vanilla extract – It enhances the chocolate flavor.
  • Salt – A pinch of salt balances sweetness and improve the taste.

Dietary adaptations

  • Vegan – Use dairy-free yogurt like soy or coconut yogurt. Coconut cream is also perfect.
  • Keto – Sweeten with monk fruit, stevia, or sugar-free honey. Avocados are already a low carb fruit!
  • High protein – Blend in a scoop (30 g) of protein powder, or swap cocoa for chocolate protein powder.
  • Gluten-free – This recipe is already gluten-free. Just check that your cocoa has no gluten (or any contamination).

How to make avocado chocolate mousse

Here’s an overview of the directions. You can find the printable recipe card at the bottom of this blog post.

Step 1 – Combine ingredients. Remove both seed and peel from the avocados, then place them in a blender together with cocoa powder, Greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla extract and salt.

Step 2 – Blend. Blend on high until the mixture reaches a smooth texture free of lumps. If you don’t have a blender, add the avocados to a bowl and mash them with a fork. Then, add all other ingredients and mix until smooth.

Matteo’s tip

Before serving, let your mousse chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour. Blend all ingredients, then transfer the mixture to mason jars or to an airtight container and refrigerate. It will be richer, creamier and with a deeper chocolate flavor.

Topping ideas

  • More chocolate – Shaved chocolate, chocolate chips, cocoa nibs, a sprinkle of cocoa powder. For less sugar, use dark or keto chocolate.
  • Berries – Fresh blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or a mix of berries.
  • Creamy toppings – Whipped cottage cheese, a dollop of Greek yogurt, ricotta, or coconut cream.

Storage directions

You can make this avocado chocolate pudding ahead, for upcoming parties or family meals.

  • To store – Transfer it to mason jars with sealable lid or to an airtight container and refrigerate. In the fridge, it will last for up to 2 days.
  • To freeze – Transfer the blended mixture to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 2 months.
  • To serve from frozen – Thaw it overnight in the fridge, then quickly stir to bring back its creamy texture. Or enjoy still frozen. Take it out of the freezer, then let it sit on the counter for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I taste the avocado?

No, you won’t taste any avocado in this mousse. Avocado has a delicate and mild flavor that easily blends with cocoa powder and maple syrup.

Can I use cream cheese?

Yes, you can replace Greek yogurt with the same amount of cream cheese. Or use cottage cheese for more protein.

Can I make avocado mousse sugar-free?

Yes, replace maple syrup with a keto sweetener of your choice. Just choose a high-quality product to avoid unpleasant chemical aftertastes.
