Smooth, rich and creamy, Whipped Cottage Cheese is ready in 2 minutes with just one ingredient. This cottage cheese whip is a high protein, low carb and low calorie alternative to whipped cream or ricotta. Perfect on its own, or as an addition to sweet and savory recipes.
If you are looking for fun new ways to eat cottage cheese, this recipe is for you. When you blend cottage cheese in a food processor, air is incorporated into the cheese. The result is a smooth, creamy, fluffy and velvety cream that you won't be able to resist. So delicious and satisfying, especially if you're not a fan of the "grainy" texture of cottage cheese curds.
When describing the taste of whipped cottage cheese, I would compare it to a combination of ricotta and whipped cream. It features the fluffy and airy consistency of whipped cream, but it is also smooth, salty and tangy like ricotta. So, let's say Whipped Ricotta!
Since coming up with this recipe, my girlfriend and I have been whipping cottage cheese times and again. Almost every night. We love it on top of soft sourdough bread with a drizzle of olive oil, or as a base for cheesecake dip and cottage cheese cookie dough as a sweet treat. Last Saturday we hosted a party, and used it for our favorite spinach dip. All guests loved it!
Why whipped cottage cheese is so good?
- Quick and easy. You only need 16 ounces of cottage cheese, a food processor or a blender, and 2 minutes of your day. Throw everything into your food processor and wait for the magic to happen.
- Smooth and rich. Have a taste and you'll get hooked. With its rich, salty flavor and fluffy, airy texture, this cottage cheese whip tastes very much like creamy ricotta, Italian burrata and whipped cream.
- Healthy and diet-friendly. This is a whipped cream made with cottage cheese, a great source of high quality protein, minerals and vitamin such as vitamin B12. Further, this whip is low calorie, low carb, keto and gluten-free.
- Customizable and versatile. Whipped cottage cheese tastes delicious on its own, as a dip for pita chips, veggies and crackers, or as a dessert with maple syrup and fruit. Have fun blending in your favorite seasonings.
Choosing the best cottage cheese
The best cottage cheese for whipping is full fat whole milk cottage cheese, 4% and 2% fat cheese are both great. In comparison to low fat cheese, these options have a much richer taste and texture when whipped. My to-go choice is Good Cultures 4% small curd cottage cheese.
Last but not least, you may need to purchase lactose-free cottage cheese, in case that you are sensitive or intolerant to lactose. I already tested out a lactose-free version of this recipe and it came out as delicious as the regular.
How to make whipped cottage cheese
This whipped cheese recipe is incredibly simple. It only calls for cottage cheese and a food processor, but you can also use a high speed blender or an immersion blender. I have included all the detailed instructions in the recipe card down below.
- Blend. Add cottage cheese to a food processor, or to a high speed blender. Blend on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until it reaches a smooth and creamy texture. If necessary, scrape down the sides with the help of a spatula.
- Serve. Using a spatula, scoop the whipped cheese out of the food processor and transfer it into a bowl or a container. Enjoy immediately with a drizzle of olive oil and seasonings, or store in the fridge for a maximum of 2 days.
If you only have a high speed blender, the recipe remains the same. Same ingredient, same instructions, same result. The only difference is that, while blending, you may need to scrape down the sides a couple of times more until it becomes as smooth.
Whipped cottage cheese ideas
Here are some tasty ways to customize this recipe. Whether savory or in its sweet version, this whipped cottage cheese dip is a winner. My recommendation? Stir in a tablespoon of strawberry jam and enjoy a cheesecake dip.
- Savory and simple. Mix in ground black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder or your favorite seasonings, and olive oil. Since cottage cheese is already high in sodium, there is no need to add extra salt.
- Spicy. Blend in chili flakes, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, jalapeños or hot sauce for the flame.
- Lemon garlic. Mix in up to one clove of garlic and half tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Enjoy with grated lemon zest and olive oil on top.
- Italian. Whip cottage cheese with a dollop of basil pesto and serve with sun-dried tomatoes packed in extra virgin olive oil.
- Sweet and simple. Stir whipped cottage cheese with maple syrup or honey, vanilla extract, then top with your favorite fresh fruit.
- Chocolate mousse. Before blending, add to your food processor two tablespoons of cocoa powder and some maple syrup. Serve with dark chocolate chips on top as a protein chocolate mousse.
- Cheesecake dip. Blend cottage cheese with fresh berries or berry jam and serve with juicy strawberries on top. Delicious by the spoon.
Serving ideas
- Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle with cracked black pepper and enjoy on top of sourdough bread or crostini. It makes such a satisfying savory breakfast.
- Side a bowl of whipped cottage cheese with veggie sticks, wholegrain crackers, pita or pita chips, cheese and grapes. The perfect appetizer plate.
- Use it as a base for a healthy no bake spinach dip recipe.
- Enjoy by the spoon, seasoned with onion powder, garlic powder, lemon zest or black pepper. It's so delicious with olive oil and fresh herbs on top. Or try it with pesto, irresistible!
- Whip cottage cheese and add it to noodles for a rich and creamy pasta dish. I love it with chopped walnuts and wholegrain penne as an alternative to fatty cheeses and ricotta.
- Spread it over a slice of sourdough bread with fresh blueberries, raspberries and sliced banana. Such a delicious breakfast toast drizzled with maple syrup. I also recommend it as a topping for protein pancakes and protein waffles.
- Use this cottage cheese whip as an alternative to Greek yogurt for a protein-packed breakfast bowl. It goes so well with protein granola.
Storage directions
Whipped cottage cheese can be served immediately, or it can be prepared ahead for later. Place leftovers in an airtight container with lid and refrigerate for up to 2 days. This cold dip maintains a fresh flavor and fluffy texture best when kept chilled. Before serving, give it a good stir and enjoy.
Unfortunately, this cottage cheese dip does not freeze well. When frozen and thawed, it becomes watery, losing both taste and texture. Since it is so quick and easy, it is better to whip and serve it directly.
