If you like chocolate, this Protein Edible Brownie Batter is for you. Made with protein powder, this 4-ingredient brownie dip is macro-friendly, low calorie and keto-friendly. 185 kcal only!
Does somebody else eat protein powder with a spoon? Yes, I know it may sound weird but I like spooning out the powder from the bag and putting it straight into my mouth. Especially if it is a flavored protein powder, like vanilla or chocolate.
Well, last day my spoon followed a longer path. Instead of bag-to-mouth, the dry protein powder stopped halfway through in a bowl. And this time it did not made its way to my mouth, because I got a genius idea: adding cocoa powder and milk.
Oh my goodness, it tasted like brownie batter. Literally…”Wow, this is the easiest high protein edible brownie batter ever.” I said to myself. And here’s how I got caught up in writing this recipe. I hope you’ll like it as much as I do!

The ingredients
As it requires only 4 ingredients, this recipe is pretty simple. However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t much to say. All the opposite, instead. Picking the wrong ingredients will completely change the result, so make sure you keep on reading.
Here is all you need to make high protein edible brownie batter at home. Plus some details, tips, tricks and substitutes.
Protein powder
This recipe uses chocolate flavored soy protein powder, but you can easily replace with your favorite protein powder. However, for the best result I still recommend vegan protein powders, casein or a mix of casein and whey. Whey alone, instead, will get pretty sticky and your protein dip won’t come out as doughy as we want.
Moreover, the choice of protein powder will also determine how much milk you should add. If whey dissolves very easily, plant based powders and casein are incredibly absorbent. Thus, you’ll need more milk.
Speaking of protein powder, I suggest opting for a flavored one – chocolate, vanilla and brownie are my favorite. If you prepare your brownie batter with unflavored protein powder instead, you will need to fix the taste with additional sweeteners – such as maple syrup, honey, erythritol, etc.
Oat flour
The oat flour will give your brownie batter some extra “bulk” and help with the consistency. Therefore, I do not recommend replacing it with more protein powder. But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that it’s irreplaceable! You can substitute oat flour with the same quantity of almond flour or with 1 tablespoon of coconut flour. In both cases, you’ll whip out a keto brownie batter with protein powder!
Important information. As it is a no-bake and no-cook recipe, you cannot replace oat flour with normal flour. Normal flour (including spelt or wholewheat flour) CANNOT be eaten raw or you’ll get sick!
Cocoa powder
In combination with chocolate flavored protein powder, this ingredient will get you a low calorie protein brownie batter without actually using chocolate. Magic! For a healthier dip that is also free from sugars, I recommend natural cocoa powder. As an alternative, feel free to utilize dutch cocoa powder or cacao.
Milk of choice
This recipe works with any type of milk you like. Be it dairy or nondairy, as it is just a drop the result is going to be the same. But still, I have a tip: for a healthier brownie batter make sure that you opt for an unsweetened milk. My favorite is sugar-free soy milk, it’s even high protein!
Customize your protein dip
One of the best things about this high protein edible brownie batter is that it’s incredible versatile. Add some ingredients here and there and you’ll end up with your own chocolate protein dip.
When it comes to add-ons, I’m pretty plain and always opt for chocolate chips. But if you want something more, here are some extra ingredients for your dip. Feel free to pick one, two or as many as you want!
- Chocolate chips
- Diced protein bars
- Crushed homemade protein cookies
- Crumbled protein brownies (try this recipe here!)
- Cereals
- Walnuts
- Peanuts
- M&Ms
- Snickers
How to make edible brownie batter with protein powder
First, in a bowl combine the protein powder with the oat flour and the cocoa powder. Pour in a drop of milk, and gradually add more until you get a smooth brownie batter consistency. Based on the protein powder choice, your brownie batter will require different amounts of milk: it is generally less for whey and more for vegan protein powder or casein.
Before serving, you can stir in some chocolate chips, if you want. Once ready, eat your protein brownie batter directly or seal and refrigerate for a maximum of 3 days.
How to store edible brownie batter
After making, place any leftover in a small airtight food container and refrigerate. If you store it properly in the fridge, this brownie batter with protein powder will last for up to three days. Once again, make sure to refrigerate it, otherwise it will go bad in a couple of hours.
