If you are looking for healthy chocolate treats, try chocolate mousse with avocado. Unusual as it may sound, avocado whips up some of the most decadent dessert recipes. I truly recommend baking my avocado brownies, here at home we have them on repeat.

But why does avocado work so well in desserts? It’s all about the healthy fats. Avocados are packed with healthy fats, which lend a rich, creamy buttery texture to the mousse. When I served it to my guests last night, they were fooled into thinking it was traditional chocolate mousse.

Healthy avocado chocolate mousse

Avocado has gained popularity in recent years as a health food, and for good reason. Often hailed as a superfood, it is a true powerhouse of nutrients, rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that help lower bad cholesterol levels. It also contains fiber, and a great deal of vitamins, such as vitamin K, vitamin E, vitamin C, and several B vitamins. Lastly, this fruit is poor in carbs and sugars, which makes it suitable for keto diets.

Here we blend avocados with cocoa powder, pure maple syrup and vanilla extract. Adding Greek yogurt provides a creamy consistency while boosting protein. The result is a decadent avocado chocolate mousse, it tastes so sinful that you won’t ever guess it is also healthy, refined sugar-free and vegan-friendly.

Recipe ingredients

This easy avocado chocolate mousse recipe calls for a handful of simple ingredients, you probably have everything at home. I have included precise quantities in the recipe card down below, but for the moment here are some details.

  • Avocado. You’ll need 2 ripe avocados of medium size, I recommend Hass avocados. To check for the best level of ripeness, gently press the fruits with your fingers. The ideal avocados are slightly soft to the touch and green inside. But not too soft, or they may be rotten.
  • Greek yogurt. The yogurt will give avocado pudding the classic texture of chocolate mousse. Rich, velvety and super creamy. For the best result I recommend 5% Greek yogurt, but you can also use low fat options. Replace with soy yogurt, coconut yogurt or coconut cream, if you follow a vegan diet.
  • Cocoa powder. Use unsweetened cocoa powder, so it is healthier. You can easily replace it with raw cocoa powder, cacao powder or Dutch cocoa powder.
  • Maple syrup. Pure maple syrup sweetens the avocado chocolate mousse without the need for refined sugar. Replace with honey, agave syrup, date syrup, or sugar-free syrup for a keto mousse.
  • Vanilla extract and salt. Vanilla extract enhances the tastes, while a pinch of salt balances sweetness and brings out all the flavors.

This simple avocado chocolate mousse recipe tastes delicious on its own, or with toppings. After whipping up the mousse, you can serve it fresh berries, like strawberries or raspberries. For a creamy contrast, top it with whipped cottage cheese or whipped cream. Try sprinkling some chocolate chips on top, if you are looking for something more satisfying.

Dietary adaptations

Whether vegan, dairy-free, low carb or high protein, here is how to easily adapt this recipe to your diet.

  • Vegan and dairy-free. Replace Greek yogurt with nondairy yogurt such as soy yogurt, or use coconut cream.
  • Gluten-free. This recipe is already gluten-free, as it does not contain any grain or flour. But for safety, double check that all ingredients are free from gluten.
  • Low carb and keto. Sweeten the avocado chocolate pudding with a keto liquid sweetener of your choice, such as sugar-free maple syrup. Or try my keto chocolate mousse recipe.
  • High protein. Add a scoop of protein powder and blend, adjusting the consistency with little milk or yogurt if it gets thick. My recommendation is chocolate flavored whey protein powder.

How to make avocado chocolate mousse

Step 1 – Prepare the avocados. Remove both seed and peel from the avocados, then place them in a blender together with cocoa powder, Greek yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla extract and salt.

Step 2 – Blend the ingredients. Blend on high until the mixture reaches a smooth texture free of lumps. If you don’t have a blender, add the avocados to a bowl and mash them with a fork. Then add all other ingredients, and mix until smooth.

Success tip

Before serving, I recommend chilling avocado chocolate mousse for at least 1 hour. Blend all ingredients, then transfer the pudding to mason jars or to an airtight container and refrigerate. The texture of your mousse will get yet richer and creamier, while the flavors will get more pronounced.

How to store avocado mousse

Avocado chocolate pudding sauce can also be made ahead for later. To store it, transfer the pudding to a mason jar with sealable lid or to an airtight container and refrigerate. In the fridge, it will last for up to 2 days.

This avocado chocolate pudding can also be frozen, for a longer storage. Transfer the blended mixture to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 2 months. To serve, you can either thaw it overnight in the fridge, or you can enjoy it still frozen. Many people love frozen avocado mousse with chocolate.

Can I taste the avocado?

No, you won’t taste any avocado in this mousse. Avocado has a delicate and mild flavor that easily blends with cocoa powder and maple syrup. These ingredients will cover the avocado tastes, giving you a decadent chocolate treat.

Can I use cream cheese?

Yes, you can replace Greek yogurt with the same amount of cream cheese. As a protein-packed alternative, you may even use cottage cheese.

Can I make avocado mousse sugar-free?

Yes, for a sugar-free avocado chocolate mousse, you can replace maple syrup with a keto-friendly liquid sweetener of your choice. However, it’s important to choose a high-quality low-sugar syrup to avoid unpleasant chemical aftertastes.
