After my cottage cheese brownies went viral on TikTok and Instagram, I decided to give the viral cottage cheese cookie dough a go. Oh my goodness, it was love at first bite. Rich, creamy and so indulgent like the real stuff. But healthy and high protein. The recipe had to be shared, period.

Ingredients & Substitutes
- Cottage cheese. This recipe uses small curd cottage cheese from whole milk, but you can also make cottage dough with low fat cottage cheese. However, I recommend high fat percentages because they have a much richer taste and more texture. Anything between 2% and 4% fat is great.
- Almond flour. Almond flour gives this cottage cheese cookie dough a rich texture and a nutty flavor. In comparison to regular flour, almond flour is gluten-free, low carb, keto, nutritious and packed with protein. Further, almond flour is safe to eat raw.
- Protein powder. A scoop of protein powder adds extra protein while enriching both taste and texture. I normally use vanilla whey protein powder, but you can make yours with vegan protein powder, casein or a whey casein blend. In terms of flavor, my recommendation is vanilla. If you don’t have this ingredient replace with more almond flour.
- Maple syrup. A couple tablespoons of pure maple syrup sweeten the protein cookie dough with no refined sugar. As an alternative you can use honey, agave syrup, date syrup, or a calorie-free sweetener.
- Vanilla extract. Vanilla gives this cottage cheese dessert the delicious taste of cookies.
- Chocolate chips. I always recommend extra dark chocolate chips with no added sugar. But of course, you can use any chocolate you like. Milk chocolate chips are great too, but they aren’t as nutritious as dark chocolate.
How to make cottage cheese cookie dough
STEP 1 – Blend. In a blender or food processor, combine cottage cheese with maple syrup and vanilla extract. Blend until it reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.
STEP 2 – Mix. Transfer the blended mixture to a mixing bowl, then add almond flour and protein powder. Stir until the dry ingredients are fully incorporated and the dough reaches a smooth consistency. Finally, stir in chocolate chips. Serve immediately, or place in an airtight container and refrigerate for a maximum of 4 days.
Storage directions
Cottage cheese cookie dough can be served immediately or it can be made ahead for later. To store, place leftovers into an airtight container and refrigerate. In the fridge, they will last for up to 4 days. To freeze, transfer to a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. As an alternative you can also scoop freshly made dough into bite-sized pieces or balls and freeze. When you are ready to eat, take out a serving and let it thaw a bit until the cookie dough gets creamy. Or enjoy straight from the freezer for healthy edible cookie dough bites.
Tips for the viral cottage cheese cookie dough
I have tried making cookie dough with nonfat cottage cheese and regular cottage cheese. But options are good, but I find that whole milk cottage cheese gives the dough a richer taste and creamier texture. My recommendation is 4% small curd cottage cheese, it blends smooth and creamy with so much flavor. I used Good Culture cottage cheese.
Almond flour can be swapped out for coconut flour, but you will need less. As coconut flour absorbs plenty of liquid, a third of cup to half a cup should be more than enough. Many people asked if oat flour works too. It does and it’s also safe to eat raw. But cottage cheese cookie dough with oat flour tends to have a stickier consistency, so I still recommend almond flour.
If you don’t have protein powder, feel free to replace it with more almond flour. Also, since protein powders are usually flavored (I like vanilla so much) and sweet, you may need some more maple syrup.
Make low carb keto cottage cheese cookie dough by replacing maple syrup with either sugar-free syrup or calorie-free sweetener. Since it is made with almond flour and protein powder, all other ingredients are already poor in carbs. Of course, you’ll also want to use 0 carb chocolate chips with no added sugar.
Feel free to customize the recipe to match your own preferences. You can add some mix-ins such as peanut butter, chopped peanuts, almonds, cranberries and even pieces of protein bars. Or turn a simple dip into soft cookies and protein balls.
