Quick baked sweet potatoes air fryer recipe

You will love this easy air fryer baked sweet potato recipe. It’s so quick and easy, in just half of the time than an oven would take. The best thing is that you won’t feel any difference in taste and texture. Your sweet potatoes will come out sweet and caramelized, perfectly tender on the inside and with a crispy skin on the outside. Fluffy, creamy and so delicious, this baked sweet potato air fryer recipe is also healthy and nutritious. High in fibers, vitamins A and C, slow releasing carbohydrates and potassium. Unlike French fries, this cooking method is low calorie because it uses minimal amounts of oil. We won’t fry, we will air fry sweet potatoes whole!

Last but not least, this roasted potato is extremely versatile. Serve as a yummy side dish for breakfasts, weeknight dinners, lunch bowls or barbecue parties. You will also love them simple, with butter, salt and pepper on top. A classic that won’t ever let you down.

Recipe ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes. Choose orange (“moist”) sweet potatoes with firm skin and few to none wrinkles. When you air fry a moist sweet potato, it becomes sweet and caramelized because the starches turn into sugar. I’ve also tried to cook Japanese sweet potato in air fryer and it worked too, but it wasn’t as sweet.
  • Olive oil. I like rubbing my potatoes with extra virgin olive oil, but you are free to choose any other oil. Avocado oil or coconut oil are also great, butter is not recommended. Keep the butter as a tasty topping.
  • Sea salt. Before you air fry whole sweet potato, sprinkle with a generous pinch of sea salt on top. Of course you can skip the salt, especially if you plan to serve it with sweet toppings.

How to bake a sweet potato in air fryer?

Prepare and season. Wash sweet potatoes under running water to remove any dirt and impurity. Transfer to a clean kitchen towel and pat them dry. Do not remove the skin. With the help of a fork, poke three to four holes on each side of the sweet potatoes. Finally, rub the skin with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.

Air fry and serve. Transfer potatoes to the air fryer basket, you don’t need to wrap them in aluminum foil. Air fry at 370°F (190°C) for 35 to 45 minutes, or until they are tender. Serve with your favorite toppings such as melted butter, salt and pepper.

Success tips

  • Choose sweet potatoes with the same size. This ensures that they will all cook evenly, so that they are ready at the same time.
  • Poke the potato skin. When you make air fryer baked sweet potatoes, it is essential that you pierce the skin with a fork so that they won’t burst while cooking.
  • Don’t wrap them in aluminum foil. Unlike oven roasted potatoes, when you bake a whole sweet potato in air fryer you should not wrap it in aluminum foil. It won’t make any difference and may increase cooking times.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer. I recommend air frying two sweet potatoes at the time, or three if they are smaller in size and they fit. When you arrange them in the basket, leave plenty of space in between them to ensure even cooking.
  • Adjust the cooking time. When you cook a sweet potato in the air fryer, the baking time depends on how big it is. Medium potatoes require about 35 minutes, but they will need more time if they are bigger.

How to store leftovers?

After you cook sweet potatoes in the air fryer, allow them to cool completely to room temperature. Once they have cooled, place into an airtight container with lid and refrigerate for a maximum of 4 days. Reheat leftover baked sweet potato in air fryer at 350°F (180°C) for about 5 to 7 minutes.

Can I freeze roasted sweet potatoes?

Yes, you can freeze air baked sweet potatoes. To freeze, let them cool completely first. Then wrap each potato in aluminum foil or place in zipper bags and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw them overnight and reheat in the air fryer or microwave before serving.

Best ways to serve air fryer baked sweet potatoes

Roast sweet potato in air fryer and you will have the perfect dish for any occasion. Just like oven baked potatoes, but much quicker to prepare. My favorite way to eat them is with simple toppings like melted butter, kosher salt, freshly grounded black pepper and some herbs. It tastes delicious for breakfast with air fryer hard boiled eggs, sunny side up eggs or with a dollop of baked beans on top.

For a sweet treat, you can serve an air fryer baked sweet potato with ground cinnamon, a drizzle of honey, and peanut butter on top. It pairs so well with Greek yogurt and fresh berries too, maybe with some crunchy protein granola. They are also perfect for lunches and dinners, with a source of protein and veggies on the side. Try them with our Mexican street corn salad and homemade salsa for a Latino night.

Are sweet potatoes healthier than potatoes?

Both white and sweet potatoes are healthy foods. However, sweet potatoes are often considered as more nutritious because they are a great source of vitamins A and C, contain more fiber, and have a lower glycemic index. In the end, what determine the healthiness of the dish is its preparation method. Try to boil, steam, bake or air fry sweet potatoes, rather than deep frying them.

How long to cook sweet potato in air fryer?

The baking time for medium size potatoes is approximately 35 minutes. However, it may significantly change based on the sizes. If you air fry whole sweet potatoes that are larger in size, they will require more time. Up to 45 to 50 minutes, in some cases.
Cubed sweet potatoes will be ready in 12 to 15 minutes, whole potatoes will need to bake 30 to 50 minutes.

What if I don’t have an air fryer?

You can roast them in the oven. Or if you are short in time, try our microwave sweet potato recipe. So quick and easy, it requires just 5 minutes.
