Surprise surprise, you only need three ingredients to make this 3 ingredient chocolate mug cake. No flour, no oil, no nut butter… and finally no banana! Well, it may sound like a magic but it is what it is: the easiest healthy chocolate mug cake recipe ever!

  • Egg: for the best result I suggest utilizing a fresh egg. Unfortunately, the egg is essential and therefore cannot be substituted with anything else.
  • Cocoa powder: for a healthier chocolate mug cake I recommend natural cocoa powder. As an alternative, feel free to utilize dutch cocoa powder or cacao.
  • Maple syrup: as it is natural and more nutritious, I like sweetening this mug cake with maple syrup. As a substitute, you are free to utilize any other liquid syrup of your choice: honey, agave syrup or date syrup all work. On the contrary, to make this 3 ingredient chocolate mug cake, granular sweeteners such as confectionery sugar, brown sugar or coconut sugar are not adequate.

As promised, this recipe only requires 3 simple ingredients. However, if you want to take your flourless mug cake to the next level, I have also included a super simple chocolate topping. And when I say simple, I mean it! Similar to the mug cake, it only calls for 3 basic ingredients.

  • Cocoa powder
  • Granular sweetener
  • Milk of choice  

And all you have to do is mixing the ingredients together, playing around with the quantity of milk until you get a smooth cream. Drizzle over your flourless mug cake and enjoy!

How to make 3 ingredient chocolate mug cake

Making this healthy 3 ingredient chocolate mug cake with no flour is incredibly quick and simple. You only need a microwave and 2 minutes of your day.

First, start by spraying a small microwave safe mug with oil, so that the chocolate cake will not stick. In the prepared mug, slightly beaten the egg, then add the cocoa powder and the maple syrup. Using a spoon or fork, stir well until all ingredients are combined and you get a smooth chocolate cake batter.

Microwave on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, making sure to not overcook your mug cake otherwise it will dry. After cooking the chocolate mug cake, you can either let it in the bowl or take it out and transfer to a dessert plate.

And if you are in the mood for something tastier, here is how to make a healthy chocolate topping. As simple as that, in a small bowl stir the cocoa powder together with the sweetener of your choice and little milk to consistency. You should need about 1 to 2 teaspoons, or until the cream gets smooth.

Tips for the best chocolate mug cake

Here are a couple of tips and tricks that will bring your 3 ingredient flourless mug cake to the next level!

  • Use a liquid sweetener, such as maple syrup or honey. Do not replace with a granular sweetener otherwise the consistency of the cake batter won’t be the same.
  • Stir into the batter a pinch of salt and a hint of coffee powder. They will enhance the flavors and make your cake irresistibly delicious!
  • Before microwaving or baking, top with some chocolate chips if you desire. Chocolate makes everything better!

  • 1 egg
  • 15 grams (2 tbsp) cocoa powder
  • 20 grams (2 tbsp) maple syrup

Healthy Chocolate Topping

Instructions 

  • Spray a small microwave safe mug with oil, so that the chocolate cake will not stick.
  • In the prepared mug, slightly beaten the egg, then add cocoa powder and maple syrup. Using a spoon or fork, stir well until all ingredients are combined and you get a smooth chocolate cake batter.
  • Microwave on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute (or bake in hot oven at 180°C/ 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes). Make sure to not overcook your mug cake otherwise it will dry.
  • After cooking the chocolate mug cake, you can either let it in the bowl or take it out and transfer to a dessert plate. For the best taste, let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Healthy Chocolate Topping

  • In a small bowl stir together cocoa powder with sweetener of choice (to taste) and milk to consistency  
  • Use the cream to top your 3 ingredient chocolate cake.

      You can bake this chocolate cake in the oven at 180ยฐC/ 350ยฐF for about 15 to 20 minutes, using static mode.
