This creamy Buffalo chicken dip with Greek yogurt tastes like buffalo chicken wings. But in a dip! Perfect for parties and appetizers, this Greek yogurt chicken dip is healthy, high protein and low calorie.
In March, my girlfriend and I embarked on an unexpected trip to Chicago. Booked 5 days prior to departure, it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences ever (unexpected things are the best).
As we are both foodies, our trip was more like a culinary tour of Chicago. A quite unusual culinary tour. Rather than just deep dish pizzas and burgers, we spent (most of) our days walking from Whole Foods to Trader Joe's - visiting the city in the meantime.
And if for Whole Foods it was the buffet, what we appreciated the most about Trader Joe's were its dips. Starting with Elote, we went on with a caramelized onion dip before ending with the Buffalo chicken dip. Oh Lord, how good was that Buffalo dip. So good that as soon as we came back I ended up making my own. In my style, of course: a healthy Buffalo chicken dip with Greek yogurt!
This is an embarrassingly easy Buffalo chicken dip recipe. Unlike other recipes, this healthy Buffalo dip with Greek yogurt has no cream cheese, no ranch dressing and no blue cheese. This makes it a healthy, low fat and low calorie Buffalo dip. Creamy and with delicious, of course!
The ingredients
No cream cheese, no ranch dressing, no blue cheese..."So Matteo, now please tell me. What's inside this easy Buffalo chicken dip?!".
Here I am, happy to tell you what are the ingredients for healthy Buffalo chicken dip with Greek yogurt. Besides the foods, you will also find more details and some substitutes. Eager to learn more? Here's everything you need for this easy chicken dip recipe!
- Shredded chicken: this Greek yogurt buffalo dip can be made with both chicken breast and canned chicken. Although the latter is more convenient, whenever I make this healthy Buffalo dip I prefer cooking and shredding the chicken breast. It is more natural and much lower in sodium.
- Canned corn: although the original recipe does not use it, I like making my Greek yogurt buffalo dip with some corn. It adds more taste and gives this chicken dip a kind of crunchy texture. If you prefer, feel free to leave it out.
- Greek yogurt: for a low calorie Buffalo chicken dip, this recipe uses nonfat Greek yogurt - unsweetened of course. Besides adding more protein, this ingredient will make your chicken dip incredibly rich and creamy without the need for cream cheese. As a replacement you can utilize any firm yogurt of your choice, also dairy-free if it is necessary. Since we are making a yogurt chicken dip, just be sure that it is unsweetened and unflavored.
- Red hot sauce: spicy and subtly garlicky, the red hot sauce will make your healthy Buffalo chicken dip taste like the original. If you don't have it, replace with BBQ sauce, ketchup or any other hot sauce.
- Salt and seasonings: this recipe uses salt, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika and garlic powder. As each of us has different preferences, add as much or as little as you want.
Dairy-free buffalo chicken dip
If you follow a vegan or dairy-free diet, I have good news for you! This Greek yogurt Buffalo chicken dip recipe can be adapted to your needs. Very easily.
Putting together a dairy-free Buffalo chicken dip is as simple as replacing Greek yogurt with dairy-free Greek yogurt alternatives. My recommendations here are soy Skyr, soy Greek yogurt or any firm yogurt. What matters is that the dairy-free yogurt is unsweetened and unflavored. In the best case scenario, it should also come with a firm texture. Or in plain English, don't use liquid yogurts!
How to make Buffalo chicken dip with Greek yogurt
Making Greek yogurt Buffalo dip at home is so quick and simple that it won't take you more than 10 minutes.
First, you will want to shred the cooked chicken breast very well. In case you opt for canned meat, instead, drain the chicken to remove any excess water. Similarly, you will also need to drain and rinse the canned corn. Once you are done, add both shredded chicken and corn to a bowl.
In the bowl, combine the shredded chicken with the corn, the red hot sauce and all the seasonings. Mix well to season the chicken, adding as much red hot sauce and seasonings as you like. Once the chicken mixture is seasoned, add the Greek yogurt and stir until you get a creamy, homogeneous dip. If it is necessary, adjust with more sauce and seasonings to your liking.
After making, you can serve this healthy Buffalo chicken dip directly - with some pita bread, chips or veggies if you like - or refrigerate in an airtight food container for up to 3 days.
How to store Greek yogurt Buffalo chicken dip
