What about turning your protein oatmeal into granola? After protein cereal, protein pancakes and protein pudding, it was high time to make protein granola at home. Served with milk, Greek yogurt or on top of a protein smoothie bowl, this recipe makes the perfect macro friendly breakfast. Try it with my protein coffee!

Crunchy and full of flavors, this may be the best protein granola recipe ever. Since making it for the first time, here at home it quickly became a new favorite. For breakfast, as a crunchy snack or late-night dessert, my girlfriend and I love it. And I’m pretty sure you will love it too. Let me tell you, my granola protein recipe is so simple that you won’t be buying expensive products anymore.

Recipe ingredients

This easy protein granola recipe requires just a handful of simple ingredients. Oats, protein powder, peanut butter and maple syrup, the same things you would use for a bowl of protein oatmeal. Unlike the ones you buy, my protein powder granola does not contain refined sugar, preservatives or any other nasty ingredient. Here are some more details:

  • Rolled oats. For the best taste and texture, use rolled oats – gluten-free if necessary. In comparison to quick cooking oats which tend to get soft, old-fashioned rolled oats maintain their shape and guarantee a crispy and crunchy granola.
  • Protein powder. The best protein granola is made with plant-based protein powder, flavored or unflavored. Whey protein powder is also suitable, but it tends to give the cereal a drier texture. In terms of flavors, my recommendations are vanilla and chocolate.
  • Maple syrup. This vegan protein granola recipe uses pure maple syrup, a healthier alternative to refined sugar and highly processed syrups. Great alternatives are honey, agave syrup, coconut syrup or sugar-free syrup.
  • Peanut butter. You’ll need creamy peanut butter, preferably without added sugar, salt and oil. Replace with almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower seed butter or tahini, if you prefer.
  • Coconut oil. Two tablespoons of coconut oil will enhance flavors and help achieve a crispy, crunchy texture. The coconut oil can be substituted with canola oil or with any other oil of your choice.
  • Salt. A pinch of salt enhances the flavors and balances sweetness. Omit if using salted peanut butter.

Different ways to make high protein granola

  • Make high protein low sugar granola. To keep the amount of sugar low, replace regular maple syrup with sugar-free liquid sweeteners. Also, choose natural peanut butter without added sugars.
  • Bake low calorie high protein granola. There are two ways to lower the calories in this recipe. First, sweeten with sugar-free syrup such as keto maple syrup. Second and probably most important, swap out regular peanut butter with powdered peanut butter dissolved in little water, until smooth and creamy.
  • Try egg white granola. Make the highest protein granola by incorporating an additional egg white into the oats. Also a whole egg will work, but egg whites alone are recommended.
  • Make dark chocolate protein granola. After baking, once it has cooled, stir in a handful of chocolate chips for a chocolatey treat. Dark or extra dark, white or milk chocolate, you can’t go wrong with chocolate.
  • Add nuts, seeds or dried fruit. For more crunchiness and taste, stir into your baked protein oat cereal some nuts and seeds. My recommendations are sliced almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and flaxseeds. Raisins and cranberries are also delicious.
  • Make granola clusters. After baking, you’ll need to let the oat cereal cool completely at room temperate. Once it has cooled, break into medium size clusters and enjoy the crunchiness.

How to make protein granola at home?

Prepare for baking. Start by preheating your oven to 170°C (325°F), then line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix all ingredients. Add coconut oil to a microwave safe bowl and microwave until it has melted. Once melted, stir peanut butter, maple syrup and salt into the coconut oil. In a large mixing bowl, combine oats with protein powder and cinnamon (optional). Give it a quick stir, then add the peanut butter-syrup mixture.

Bake and let cool. Evenly spread the protein oat mixture on the lined baking sheet. Bake in hot oven for about 20-30 minutes, stirring halfway through to prevent burning and ensure even toasting. Once it is golden brown, remove from the oven and let cool for at least 1 hour before serving. You can now mix in extra ingredients such as walnuts, raisins, or chocolate chips.

Success tips

Making protein granola cereal at home is quick and simple, you don’t need to be a professional baker or a pro chef. However, there are still a couple of tips and tricks that I want to give you.

  • Use your favorite protein powder. The best homemade granola protein recipe is made with high quality vegan protein powder, ideally vanilla flavored. In comparison to whey, it does not dry out when heated.
  • Choose creamy peanut butter. There are many types of peanut butter out there, but not all of them are equally great. While some are thick and crunchy, this recipe works best with a very smooth nut butter. It should be on the liquid side, so that it mixes better.
  • Personalize your protein granola. Consider adding some extra chocolate chips, walnuts or seeds, but only after baking. You should let the protein oat cereal cool down a bit before stirring in any extra.
  • Keep an eye on the baking time, and stir halfway through. Baking this high protein homemade granola may take from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your oven. Check it out after 20 minutes, and make sure you stir it halfway through.

How can I store granola?

  1. Let cool: Before storing, make sure you let your protein granola cereal cool completely at room temperature. This helps preserve a crunchy texture and delicious taste.
  2. Place in an airtight food container: Once cool, place into a sealable food container or glass jar with lid. Be sure to tightly close the container, this way your cereal won’t absorb humidity and moisture.
  3. Store in a cool, dry place: Keep the container in a cool and dry place, such as you pantry and consume within a week.

Great way to boost protein content in granola. I used less maple syrup and coconut oil as listed, replaced it with a little water just to keep calories down. First time I ate it added sunflower seeds and walnuts with bananas and milk. Next time who knows? So many ways to change it up. Thanks for a really easy delicious recipe!
