The perfect post workout yogurt bowl
This post workout protein yogurt bowl is the perfect meal to fuel your body after exercising.
Besides being incredibly delicious, this vanilla protein yogurt bowl is also highly nourishing. The healthy carbs that naturally come in blueberries will restore your energy levels while the protein will repair and build your muscles after training.
What is more, this post workout yogurt bowl is rich in nutrients, antioxidants and vitamin. God save blueberries, a real superfood! Blueberries are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress. All you need after a workout!
The ingredients for protein yogurt bowl
You only need a couple of simple ingredients to whip up a fluffy protein yogurt bowl.
For more protein I like scooping in some good protein powder, but you don’t have to. Also without using protein powder this post workout yogurt bowl has grams of protein.
Ingredients and tips
Here’s all you need to make this post workout protein yogurt bowl.
Greek yogurt. This recipe uses plain 0% fat Greek yogurt, free from added sugar. You can replace with Skyr or low fat quark – both are packed with protein just like Greek yogurt.
For a vegan bowl, make sure to use dairy free Greek yogurt or Skyr. However, keep in mind that the protein content of plant based yogurts is slightly lower.
Vanilla protein powder. For my post workout yogurt bowls I like using vanilla whey isolate.
It blends smoothly and has a very delicate taste. What is more, whey isolate protein powder features an excellent amino acid profile, which will help your muscles recover faster. However, if you don’t want to use whey, replace with plant-based protein powder.
As mentioned before, I like making my protein yogurt with vanilla whey. But feel free to prepare yours with the flavor you like the most – chocolate is my second choice ;). Or use unflavored protein plus circa 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, if you desire.
Sweetener of choice. I personally never add any extra sweetener to my yogurt, especially if I am using vanilla protein powder. But if you have the sweet tooth or if you use unflavored protein powder, a couple teaspoons of sweetener may be a good idea.
You can utilize calorie-free sweeteners – such as erythritol or stevia – or be more conservative and go for maple syrup, honey or (coconut) sugar. In terms of quantity, add as much as you feel necessary.
Toppings
POV (Point of View): the best part of yogurt bowls is the topping.
I absolutely love being creative and adding some fruit, cereals and much more on the top of my yogurt.
For this post workout protein yogurt bowl I am using blueberries, puffed spelt and cocoa nibs. These toppings make my post workout meal more complete and satisfying.
But feel free to experiment and unleash your creativity. Top your own post workout yogurt bowl with banana, mango, granola, nuts and seeds… the sky is the limit!
Just make sure that you don’t overdo on toppings. Although they are very healthy and delicious, some foods – like granola or nuts – can get quite high in calories.
How to make post workout protein yogurt without protein powder
If you don’t have protein powder, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. You can still make a high protein post workout yogurt also without additional powder.
This exact same recipe prepared with just yogurt still boasts 21 grams of high quality protein from the Greek yogurt.
However, I need to mention that your post workout yogurt won’t be as high protein if you use vegan yogurt alternatives. Your bowl will have roughly 12 grams of protein.
How to make post workout yogurt bowl
Making this post workout yogurt bowl is so quick and simple that you only need 5 minutes. Here’s how to make this delicious protein yogurt bowl:
- Add ice cubes, Greek yogurt, protein powder (and optionally sweetener of choice) to a blender and process on high until smooth and fluffy. If necessary, mix in a splash of milk to reach the desired texture – this depends on the protein powder that you use.
- Serve right away topped with blueberries, puffed spelt, cocoa nibs or any topping of your choice. I recommend preparing this post workout yogurt bowl before eating. If you keep it in the fridge after blending, the ice will melt and make your yogurt watery.
Can I make this protein yogurt bowl ahead?
Although you could theoretically make it ahead and keep in the fridge, I strongly recommend whipping up your bowl just before eating. The reason is that the yogurt is blended with ice cubes, and when left in the fridge, the ice will melt and make your yogurt watery.
You may now be thinking of freezing it. But let me tell you already that unfortunately this won’t work as expected.
Since this yogurt bowl is virtually fat-free, sadly your bowl won’t become an ice cream. It will get more like an ice cube, instead!
