Healthy single serve apple crumble
This year I decided to wait no further and make my own healthy apple crumble. But as I live on my own, I didn't want crumble for a crowd. So I made this healthy apple crumble for one!
If you want to treat yourself without any guilt, this single serve apple crumble recipe is what you need. Quick and easy to make, this crumble is also so healthy. And here's why!
- This apple crumble for one is free from added sugars.
- Prepared with almond flour and oats, my recipe is also gluten-free and rich in fibers.
- My crumble is also high protein - without the need for protein powder - because it uses almond flour.
- Last but not least, even the vanilla ice cream on the top is healthy! I used Zero vanilla ice cream, which is sugar-free and lower in calories.
Ingredients
Here’s all you need to make this healthy apple oat crumble, plus some details and substitutes.
Crumble
- Rolled oats
- Defatted almond flour - replace with normal almond flour, oat flour, flour or protein powder
- Granulated sweetener of choice - erythritol, xylitol, coconut sugar or brown sugar
- Coconut oil - replace with butter or vegan butter
- Milk - dairy or nondairy milk
- Cinnamon
Apple filling
- Apple - use a medium, sweet apple (red apples are best)
- Cornstarch - replace with flour or skip
- Cinnamon and nutmeg
Which apples for crumble?
Although you can make crumble with any type of apple, the best pick are red apples (any variety, I like honeycrisp). Red apples are better for making crumble because they have a sweeter taste. On the contrary, green apples make your crumble slightly sour.
To sum up, go for red apples if you want a sweeter crumble or use green apples if you look for the sour aftertaste.
How to make apple crumble for one
Making this single serve apple crumble is a piece of cake. No baking skill is required, so anyone can prepare it. The hardest part will be waiting for the crumble to bake!
Here's how to make healthy apple crumble for one!
Step 1: make the apple filling
In a small bowl, toss apple chunks with granulated sweetener, cornstarch and cinnamon. Transfer apple filling to a greased ramekin.
Step 2: make the crumble
In a bowl combine oats, defatted almond flour, granulated sweetener of choice, ground cinnamon, pinch salt and melted coconut oil (or butter). Pour in milk and mix to get a crumbly dough, adding more milk if the streusel is still too dry after mixing.
Sprinkle crumble evenly on top of the apple mixture.
Step 3: bake, top and enjoy!
Finally, bake in hot oven at 180 Cº (350 Fº) for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and apples are tender. Serve warm with a scoop of (sugar-free) vanilla ice cream on the top, if you want.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions
- Can I add protein powder? Definitely! You can either swap out some of the almond flour with protein powder or add it on the top of the crumble ingredients. Just keep in mind that your streusel may require more or less milk depending on the protein powder.
- Can I skip the oil? Yes, coconut oil can be omitted to cut some calories. However, I do not recommend this because your crumble simply won't get crumbly!
- Is this apple crumble gluten-free? Yes, this single serve crumble recipe is gluten-free, if you utilize certified gluten-free rolled oats and almond flour. Double-check all product labels to be 100% safe!
- Is this single serve crumble vegan? Indeed! Just make sure to use plant based milk and you'll get a vegan apple crumble for one.
- Can I make this in the air fryer? Yes, air fry your healthy crumble in hot machine at 160 Cº (320 Fº) for 10 to 18 minutes.
- Can I microwave this oat crumble? Unfortunately, this single serve apple crumble cannot be made in the microwave. The recipe requires either an oven or an air fryer.
