What is Disney Dole Whip?

This copycat Dole Whip recipe is essentially a diy Dole Whip, the pineapple soft serve from Disney. If you have ever visited Disneyland or Walt Disney World, you may have already tried it at the Enchanted Tiki Room and the Tiki Juice Bar in Adventureland. Sweet, smooth and refreshing, the iconic pineapple dole is a must for kids and adults of all ages. I tried it for the first time a couple of years ago, after a two-hour line to get it. And since then it’s been pure love.

Many people associate the Dole Whip ice cream with Disney. But in reality, this dessert was invented by the Dole Food Company in 1984 as a swirled pineapple soft serve dessert. When in 1986 the Dole Company became an official sponsor of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland, the Dole Whip gained popularity. So much popularity that still nowadays it goes viral on the social media of Disney fans.

And for good reasons! People – myself included – LOVE Disney Dole Whip recipe. Made with simple ingredients like frozen pineapple and dairy-free creamer, this sweet and fresh dessert is vegan, low-fat and low calorie. Additionally, it also looks amazing with its smooth swirl.

But sadly, finding a tasty Dole Whip to buy is quite hard. The pineapple soft serve is only available in few venues like Aloha Island in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom, or at Pineapple Lanai and at the Tiki Juice Bar. There are not many – if any – ice cream places that sell it outside Disneyland and Disney World.

Good news for you! With this pineapple Dole Whip recipe you can finally make your own Disney frozen treat at home. With just 3 ingredients, it’s quick and easy that you’ll have it on repeat. No strange ingredient, no sugar, no nasties. And NO ice cream maker!

Dole Whip ingredients

The original recipe for Dole Whip uses frozen pineapple, sugar, nondairy creamer, flavors and gums. It’s already pretty simple. BUT my DIY recipe is much simpler and healthier, with no added sugar and no gums. It only calls for frozen pineapple, a milk of your choice and fresh lemon juice. Here are some more details:

Frozen pineapple. First of all, you’ll need about 3 cups of frozen pineapple chopped into chunks. I recommend freezing fresh pineapple, but you can also make the dole soft serve with canned pineapple, frozen of course. Just be sure to drain all the excess juice, and choose natural canned fruit without added sugar to make the Dole Whip healthy.

Milk of choice. Pieces of pineapple are blended with milk to create a smooth and creamy soft serve dole consistency. To keep it vegan this recipe uses nondairy plant based milk, but you can also make yours with whole milk or semi-skimmed milk. My recommendations are coconut milk, soy milk, unsweetened almond milk and oat milk.

Lemon juice. Last but not least, my DIY Dole pineapple ice cream recipe requires two teaspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Including lemon balances sweetness, adds a touch of tartness, and brings out all the good flavors.

Aside from pineapple, milk and lemon, you can add a couple tablespoons of your favorite sweetener and some vanilla extract. While vanilla marries very well with the fruit, the sweetener may be necessary to make a sweeter dessert. But only if necessary. I find that the pineapple is already pretty tasty by itself. You should consider adding some sugar, coconut sugar, or brown sugar if you feel it lacks taste. For sugar-free Dole Whip, choose monk fruit sweetener, erythritol, or xylitol.

How to make Dole Whip at home?

Making Disney Dole whip at home is very simple. Grab your blender, throw in all the ingredients and blend until the mixture reaches a soft serve consistency. Enjoy your Disneyworld experience at home!

Add frozen pineapple chunks, milk and lemon juice to a food processor or high speed blender. If desired, you can add vanilla extract and some sweetener to taste. Blend on high until smooth and creamy, scraping down sides as needed. Serve immediately as a soft serve dessert or as a snack.

I recommend making pineapple dole whip with ninja creami, Vitamix, a food processor, or a powerful high speed blender. A powerful blender ensures that the frozen pineapple whip gets perfectly smooth and creamy without chunks of fruit.

Do you want the original Dole Whip swirl?

To recreate the original Disneyland dole whip experience at home, place the blended mixture into a pastry bag with a star tip and squeeze it out into a bowl. As an alternative you can also use a regular zipper bag. Just cut with scissors a cross on one of its edges. Easy peasy.

Also, make sure to freeze the pineapple dole mixture for at least 30 minutes before piping it out. This ensures that the soft serve comes out with a nice swirl like at Disneyland.

Recipe variations

  • Vegan Dole Whip – Choose your favorite nondairy milk such as soy milk, coconut milk and almond milk. Or replace with coconut cream.
  • Dole Whip Float – Grab a tall glass, fill half of it with fresh pineapple juice and then top with the pineapple soft serve treat. For all adults, you can also mix the juice with some rum.
  • Chocolate Covered Dole – Drizzle your homemade Disney Dole Whip with melted chocolate. You can serve it immediately, or freeze it for some minutes until the chocolate shell hardens.
  • Change Fruit – Instead of pineapple, experiment with other fruits such as frozen bananas, frozen mango, frozen watermelon, cherries, frozen raspberries or berries. You can even combine multiple fruits. My favorite is the strawberry dole whip with banana.
  • More Ideas – Blend the basic pineapple whip with additional ingredients such as coconut, protein powder, cocoa powder or vanilla extract.
