This chocolate Banana Mousse tastes rich and creamy – naturally sweetened with only bananas. Made with just 3 ingredients, this easy mousse is eggless, dairy-free and vegan. You will love it as a healthy dessert or as a snack.
I came up with this recipe almost by accident while remaking my viral 3-ingredient banana brownies. I was too hungry to wait for them to bake, so I tasted the batter right away. No eggs in this one, meaning it’s safe to eat raw. Oh my goodness, it was so so delicious – just like brownie batter. I realized it could be something more, maybe a quicker treat that didn’t need baking. So, I turned my brownies into this rich chocolate banana mousse. Now it’s one of my go-to desserts for whenever I have ripe bananas, a good twist from the usual chocolate banana bread.

What is banana mousse made of?
This chocolate banana mousse requires just 3 simple ingredients: ripe bananas, peanut butter and cocoa powder. For a sweeter flavor you can also add 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or honey, but I find that bananas give already plenty of sweetness. Read further for more details, precise quantities can be found in the recipe card at the bottom.
- Bananas – Choose bananas that are just ripe, they should be yellow and nicely soft to the touch. Avoid unripe bananas as they lack both sweetness and creaminess, and steer clear of overripe ones, which can add an overpowering flavor.
- Peanut butter – Use drippy peanut butter with no added sugar or oil, little salt is fine. As an alternative you can replace with almond butter, cashew butter, walnut butter, sunflower seed butter or tahini.
- Cocoa powder – For a healthy banana mousse, I recommend natural cocoa powder with no added sugar. Dutch cocoa and cacao will also work.
How to make banana mousse
Step 1 – Mix. In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth. Add peanut butter and stir until fully combined. Gradually mix in the cocoa powder, stirring until the mousse reaches a smooth, silky texture. Alternatively, you can also blend all ingredients together in a blender until creamy.
Step 2 – Serve. Transfer the mousse to serving glasses or bowls and let chill in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Recipe tips
- Pick the right bananas. Choose bananas that are ripe but not overly ripe. They should be yellow and slightly soft to the touch, which helps create the perfect sweetness and texture.
- Sweeten if necessary. Taste the mousse right after mixing, and if you prefer it sweeter, add a little honey or maple syrup till it’s just right.
- Mix until creamy. Make sure to mash or blend the mixture until completely smooth and lump-free. If the mousse is too thick, add a little milk to reach the perfect consistency. Using a blender can also help achieve the creamiest texture.
- Chill before serving. For the best texture, let the mousse chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will enhance both taste and texture, making it extra rich and creamy.
- Customize to your liking. Add your favorite mix-ins or toppings, like fresh fruit, whipped cream, whipped cottage cheese, chocolate chips, walnuts, or cranberries. You can even mix in a scoop of protein powder for an extra boost.
Storage directions
Place leftovers in mason jars with lid or in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 3 days. Freezing is not recommended because it can change the smooth texture of your mousse. However, if you want, you can still freeze it for a treat similar to ice cream (“nice cream”). Just know that it won’t be as fluffy when thawed and served.

Banana Mousse
Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas
- ½ cup (40 g) cocoa powder
- ¼ cup (60 g) creamy peanut butter, or preferred nut butter
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas until smooth. Add peanut butter and stir until fully combined.
- Gradually stir in the cocoa powder until the mousse is smooth and silky. If the mixture feels too thick, add a little milk to reach your desired texture. Alternatively, you can blend all ingredients together in a blender for an extra creamy result.
- Taste and adjust sweetness with maple syrup or honey, if desired.
- Transfer the mousse to serving glasses or bowls and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Notes
- Banana Ripeness: Soft and yellow ripe bananas work best to achieve natural sweetness and a creamy texture. Avoid overly ripe bananas as they may alter the taste and texture.
- Nut Butter Substitution: If you’re allergic to nuts or prefer an alternative, you can swap peanut butter with any nut butter (I recommend almond or cashew butter), sunflower seed butter, or white tahini.
- Sweetness Level: The natural sweetness of ripe bananas is usually enough for me. But if you prefer a sweeter flavor, feel free to add maple syrup or honey to taste.
- High Protein: For added protein, mix in a scoop of protein powder – chocolate and vanilla are my favorites. If adding protein powder, you may need to adjust the consistency with a splash of milk until it reaches a smooth texture.
- Blender Option: For a smoother texture, blend all ingredients together in a blender or food processor until creamy.
- Consistency: If the mousse feels too thick, add a splash of milk to reach your desired level of creaminess. This can help maintain a smooth, silky texture, especially if you’re using a thicker nut butter or adding protein powder.
- Chilling: For the best flavor and texture, it’s best to chill the mousse for at least 30 minutes before serving.
- Storage: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days in sealable mason jars with lids or in an airtight container. Freezing is not recommended as the mousse may lose its silky texture. But you can still freeze it, if you prefer a frozen treat similar to ice cream.
