Once you know how to soft boil eggs in an air fryer, you won’t go back. Unlike the traditional stove top way, this method does not require any pan or babysitting the water to boil. Additionally, it yields the same result every single time: a runny yolk with firm white.

It was always a struggle for me to achieve the desired texture, sometimes the white was undercooked and others the yellow was too hard. But my air fryer saved me, and now I can finally dunk my oat bread into dippy eggs!

Ingredients

  • Eggs – For the best result, use large eggs at room temperature. Whenever possible, choose high quality USDA grade-A or grade-AA eggs from local farmers. One thing to be picky about is temperature. Room temperature eggs cook evenly, every time.

Additionally, you’ll need an ice bath to facilitate peeling. For this, gather cold water and ice cubes. If you don’t have ice cubes, you can also use cold water from the tap. I’m going to explain this more in detail later.

How to make air fryer soft boiled eggs

Step 1 – Preheat. Preheat the air fryer to 275°F (135°C). If yours only goes down to 300°F (150°C), set it to 300°F (150°C).

Step 2 – Air fry. Place eggs in the air fryer basket, in a single layer so they don’t overlap. Cook 9 minutes for a dippy eggs or 10 minutes for a firmer texture. If air frying at 300°F (150°C), reduce total time by 1-2 minutes.

Step 3 – Prep ice bath. Fill half of a bowl with cold water and half with ice cubes.

Step 4 – Let cool. Once the eggs are ready, use kitchen tongs to remove them from the air fryer. Place immediately into the prepared ice bath and let cool for at least 3 minutes.

Step 4 – Peel. Gently tap them on a hard surface to crack the shell. Start peeling from the wider end where the air pocket is, the shell should come off easily. Run under cool water to remove any piece of shell, then serve or store for later.

Cooking times and temperatures

When it comes to making soft boiled eggs in air fryer, unfortunately there is no exact time that applies to everyone. The time will depend on model of air fryer, temperature of the machine, temperature and size of the eggs. Additionally, we all have different preferences for doneness of the yolk.

The ideal cooking time is 275 degrees Fahrenheit or 135 degrees Celsius. But if your air fryer does not go any lower than 300°F (150°C), you can still get the same result by reducing total time by 1-2 minutes.

Here are the recommended cooking times and temperatures. Be sure you make some tests to find the best option for you.

  • 8 – 9 minutes at 275°F (135°C): Dippy eggs with runny yolk and slightly set white.
  • 9 – 11 minutes at 275°F (135°C): Runny yolk with firm white.
  • 7 – 8 minutes at 300°F (150°C): Runny yolk and slightly set white.
  • 8 – 9 minutes at 300°F (150°C): Runny yolk with firm white.
Soft Boiled Eggs in Air Fryer

Here’s a quick way to test your ideal timing. Arrange 4 eggs in the basket of your air fryer, then set it to 275°F (135°C) and cook. Remove one after 8 minutes, one after 9, one after 10 and one after 11 minutes. Place them in 4 different bowls with iced water, peel and then check what cooking time yielded the perfect doneness.

How to peel eggs easily

  1. Prepare the ice bath – While the eggs are cooking, fill half of a medium bowl with cold water and half with ice cubes. Make sure you do this ahead to have it ready for when they are cooked.
  2. Let cool – Once they are ready, use a pair of tongs to remove eggs from the air fryer and then place them in the ice bath. Be gentle and don’t throw them, so the shell won’t break. Leave them in the cold water for 3 to 5 minutes, adding more ice cubes if they melt.
  3. Crack – Crack one egg at a time by gently tapping it on a hard surface. Be careful to crack it lightly, without smashing the shell.
  4. Peel – Start peeling from the spot where the air pocket is, usually at the wider end. If you can find the thin membrane that divides the shell from the white, use it to facilitate peeling.
  5. Clean – Quickly pass the eggs under cool, running water to wash away any dirt and piece of shell. Serve immediately or store for later.

If you don’t have ice cubes, let the tap water run until it’s very cold before filling the bowl. To speed up the process, refrigerate the water for a few minutes while the eggs cook. You can then maintain a cold temperature by changing water frequently.

Chef tips

  • Choose high quality eggs. I recommend grade-A large eggs from free range chickens, preferably from local farmers. Additionally, they should be at room temperature rather than from the fridge.
  • Adjust cooking time. Cooking time is essential, as it ensures the perfect air fryer soft boiled eggs with jammy yolk and firm white. This recipe recommends 9 – 10 minutes, but air fryers may differ in power. Test at different timings with one or two eggs first to see what’s your ideal spot.
  • Don’t skip the ice bath. Be sure to let the eggs cool in a bowl with ice and water before peeling. This way the shell will come off easily, the egg won’t fall apart and you won’t burn your fingers.
  • Air fry in batches. Arrange the eggs in a single layer in the basket, without overlapping. Don’t try to fit in as many as possible, leaving some space allows the air to circulate better and prevents the eggs from colliding. I usually cook 4 to 5 at once.

How to make ahead and store

To store. Allow the eggs to cool completely, then place into an airtight container, unpeeled, and refrigerate. With the peel they will last for up to 3 days, but without peel they should be consumed within 2 days.

To reheat. Place the egg in a bowl of hot water for 2-3 minutes to warm it up without overcooking its yolk.

I do not recommend freezing soft boiled eggs, as the yolks would set and the whites would get rubbery when thawed. For the best result, eat immediately or store leftovers in the fridge for a maximum of 3 days.

Serving ideas

Packed with protein and nutrients, low in carb and low in calories, eggs are great anytime of the day. For breakfast, you can pair air fryer jammy eggs with homemade oat bread, protein bagels or arepas and creamy avocado. Add some cottage cheese for a boost of protein, or baked beans for extra fiber.

As a light meal, they can complement a cozy bowl of white bean soup. Or serve them with fire roasted tomatoes, spinach salad or air fryer Brussels sprouts to eat more greens. For a complete dish, add a source of carbs such as sourdough bread, orzo, wild rice and oats.
