The best diet ice cream recipe

Are you on a diet but crave sweets? Hang on, this low cal ice cream recipe is all you need. I came up with it last year, on an attempt to satisfy a wildest craving for dessert after dinner. That day, I still had about 120 calories left and a yogurt bowl was not that amusing. So I threw in my blender some frozen bananas and a dollop of Greek yogurt, gave it a nice blend and boom: The Ultimate Award-Winning Best Low Calorie Ice Cream in this planet. I love it, and I’m sure you will love it too. Still not convinced? Then stick around and keep on reading.

  • Low in calories. A serving of this dessert has just about 117 kcal, which is not even comparable to the calories you will find in regular ice cream. Good for weight loss, good for the diet also on weight watchers.
  • High protein. Alongside my protein ice cream, this may be the king of all macro-friendly summer desserts. Made with Greek yogurt, it is also high in protein without protein powder.
  • Damn delicious and creamy. You’ll be impressed at how rich and creamy a simple 2 ingredient low kcal ice cream can taste. Try it in one of its flavor variations for the best experience.
  • Quick and easy. Add all ingredient to a blender and in less than 5 minutes you will make a delicious diet ice cream that is low in calories but high in protein and taste. Perfect for night cravings, when you’re too tired and lazy to cook. No ice cream maker!
  • Simple ingredients. Halo Top, Breyers, Enlightened, Nick’s. There are tons of low cal ice creams out there, but all are loaded to the brick with artificial sweeteners, gums, flavorings and other nasties that upset the stomach. Well, not this one. This recipe only requires 2 simple, clean ingredients. Real food only.
  • Budget-friendly. The times when you had to take a loan to buy diet ice cream are behind. My recipe is insanely cheap, just bananas and Greek yogurt.

Ingredients in low calorie ice cream

  • Bananas. Use peeled and chopped frozen bananas, the riper they are, the sweeter your ice cream. Frozen bananas – not fresh fruit – are key, because they help produce a creamier, velvety consistency.
  • Greek yogurt. Nonfat Greek yogurt makes the ice cream low in calories and high in protein. For the least calories this recipe uses low-fat Greek yogurt, but you can swap it out for 2% fat or whole milk Greek yogurt. The higher the fat percentage, the creamier its texture. As an alternative, you can also use cottage cheese.

Make it dairy-free and vegan!

If you can’t eat dairy or if you follow a plant based vegan diet, replace regular Greek yogurt with dairy-free alternatives. Be sure that the yogurt of choice has a thick and firm texture, or your frozen dessert won’t come out as creamy.

How to make low calorie ice cream

  1. Blend. Add sliced frozen bananas and Greek yogurt to a food processor or high speed blender. Blend on high until smooth and creamy, scraping down sides as needed.
  2. Freeze. Scoop the mixture out into a loaf pan lined with parchment and cover with a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap to prevent freezer burns. Freeze for at least 2 hours before serving.
  3. Enjoy. Remove from the freezer about 10 minutes before eating. Scoop into a bowl and enjoy with your favorite toppings.

Weight loss ice cream recipe tips

  • Use frozen ripe bananas. Besides providing natural sweetness, frozen bananas blend better and produce a creamier, smoother texture. So, replacing or omitting them is not recommended.
  • Sweeten to your own likings. After blending, taste a bit of the mixture. If it is too plain for you with just bananas, sweeten with some honey or maple syrup to your likings.
  • Customize with extra ingredients. Make low cal ice cream tastier with the addition of ingredients like cocoa powder, vanilla extract, or peanut butter. Or throw in a scoop of protein powder for a more balanced dessert.
  • Use a powerful food processor and mix at high speed. Using a powerful food processor or blender will ensure that the ingredients get mixed completely. All that we need for this creamy low calorie ice cream recipe!
  • Serve immediately for a soft serve consistency. If you prefer your dessert to have a creamier soft serve consistency, do not freeze it after blending. Scoop it out of the blender into a bowl and enjoy your healthy ice cream for weight loss.

Flavor variations

  • Vanilla – Mix half teaspoon of vanilla extract together with bananas and Greek yogurt. As an alternative you can also use vanilla flavored Greek yogurt, preferably sugar-free. Vanilla is probably the lowest calorie ice cream flavor, because it does not add extra ingredients.
  • Chocolate – Add to the base 1 to 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, and optionally serve with diet chocolate chips.
  • Coffee – Include half a teaspoon of instant coffee powder. As an alternative, quickly stir Greek yogurt with brewed coffee or espresso.
  • Peanut butter – Blend bananas and Greek yogurt with a tablespoon of peanut butter. For the lowest calorie, use powdered peanut butter such as PBfit or PB2.
  • Strawberry cheesecake. Replace 2 of the bananas with 1 1/2 cup of frozen strawberries, mix in a teaspoon vanilla extract and then serve with calorie-free strawberry syrup.
  • Mint chocolate chips. Enrich the taste with a teaspoon of peppermint extract and stir in a handful of dark chocolate chips before eating.
  • Chewy oatmeal cookies – After blending, stir into the mixture pieces of healthy oatmeal cookies. My recommendations are choc chip cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies.
  • Sea salt caramel – Enjoy drizzled with low cal caramel or keto caramel sauce and add a sprinkle of salt for an extra kick.
  • Cookies and cream – Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract and fold through pieces of sugar-free Oreos. If you don’t have them, replace with any diet cookies on hand.

Storage directions

After blending, pour the mixture into a loaf pan lined with parchment paper and cover well to prevent freezer burns. Leftovers should be stored in the freezer. Although it may last for up to a month, this low calorie frozen dessert is best served within 2 weeks after preparation. In this timeframe, it will still have a creamy texture and plenty of flavor.

10 minutes before serving, remove the frozen treat from the freezer. Enjoy on its own, or with your favorite toppings like zero calorie caramel sauce or sugar-free sprinkles.

Can I add protein powder?

Yes, you can make this recipe with an extra scoop of your protein powder. My recommendation is vanilla flavor whey protein powder, it blends smoothly and creates a creamy consistency.

Is reduce calorie ice cream healthy?

Yes, this dessert recipe provides a healthy and nutritious alternative to regular ice cream. Made with just bananas and Greek yogurt, it is high protein, low fat, low calorie and gluten-free. Additionally, it does not contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, gums or flavorings at all.

How many calories are in diet ice cream?

A serving of ice cream provides approximately about 117 calories, 3.8 grams of protein, 26.6 grams of carbohydrates and 0.5 grams of fats.
Note: precise macronutrient composition will slightly change based on the ingredients that you use.
