Recipe ingredients
Air fried chickpeas are so simple to make. You only need 3 main ingredients: chickpeas, olive oil and spices of your choice. The best thing is that you can customize these crispy garbanzos as you like. Here are some more details:
- Chickpeas. This recipe uses can chickpeas, they’re so convenient and quick to prepare. As an alternative you can also cook your own garbanzo beans at home, but soaking and boiling them will require more planning.
- Olive oil. I like extra virgin olive oil, it is packed with nutrients and flavor. You can replace with avocado oil, or with another oil of your choice – olive oil is still recommended.
- Seasonings. Pick and choose all the spices and seasonings you like the most. I usually toss my air fry chickpeas with sea salt, smoked paprika and garlic powder. Other great spices are onion powder, ground black pepper, Italian seasoning, curry powder, and cayenne.
How to make air fryer chickpeas crispy?
- Drain and rinse your chickpeas, then pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Drying them is essential for a crispy result.
- Place the garbanzo beans into a mixing bowl and combine with olive oil, salt and seasonings of choice. Toss until fully coated with olive oil and spices. I recommend keeping some of the spices for later, we’re gonna toss them once again after air frying.
- Transfer your spiced garbanzo to the air fryer basket and bake for 12 to 16 minutes, shaking a couple of times while cooking. In case your chickpeas start popping, it means that they are – more than – ready. Do not roast any further, or they may burn. Right after air frying, plunge into a bowl and toss with more olive oil and extra seasonings.

Success tips
Here are a couple of tips to make the crispiest and most delicious chickpeas in air fryer. Read through the following lines very carefully, follow all my recommendations and you’ll be amazed at the result.
- Dry them very well. Once you have drained and rinsed your chickpeas, pat them dry using a clean kitchen towel or a paper towel. If your air fryer chickpeas are not crispy, chances are that you haven’t dry them before roasting.
- Experiment with spices. Season chickpeas with a pinch of salt and all the spices you like. My favorite are smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and Italian seasoning.
- Season after baking. Right after air frying chickpeas, transfer them into a bowl and re-toss with additional spices. This will make your crunchy snack yet more flavorsome.
- Shake the air fryer basket many times. While they are roasting, you should give the chick pea snack a couple of shakes. This ensures even cooking and prevents them from burning.
- Serve right away. For a crunchy experience, I recommend enjoying your garbanzo beans air fryer snack after baking. That’s when they are at their crispiest and tastiest.
- Air fry before serving. If you are meal prepping, make sure you air fry garbanzo beans for a couple of minutes right before serving. By re-crisping them, your beans will get as crunchy and tasty as freshly roasted.
Storage information
After you air fry garbanzo beans, let them cool completely over a baking sheet or over a plate. This prevents condensation inside the container, which may make your crispy snack soggy. In the meantime, place a paper towel at the bottom of an airtight food container. It will absorb any undesired moisture.
Once they have cooled, transfer your crunchy chickpeas into the airtight container or into a large mason jar. Seal with the lid and store at room temperature for a maximum of a week. For a longer storage, pack them into zipper bags or a freezer safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Re-crisp for a couple of minutes in the air fryer before serving.

Yes, you can also prepare them without. However, I do not recommend it. Air fried chickpeas with no oil won’t have the same crispy texture and tasty flavor. It is just a tablespoon, but the extra virgin olive oil will make the difference.

I would like to try this recipe in conventional oven. Could you please advice on the time and temp for it.
Thank you
Hey dear Meg, thanks a lot for your comment.
If you want to make crispy chickpeas in the oven, you’ll need to bake them for 15 to 20 minutes in hot oven at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Make sure you give a couple of stirs while they are roasting ๐
And don’t forget to let me know how they turn out!
