Avocado is one of the best ingredient for baking. Rich in (healthy) fats, it perfectly replaces butter, oil, peanut butter and almond butter. Further, it makes miracles when it comes to substituting eggs in vegan desserts. Just like in this healthy avocado brownie recipe, which is naturally vegan, dairy-free, nut-free and eggless.

“Avocado and chocolate brownies, does it taste good?” Yes, it does. Odd as it may sound, avocado goes hands in hands with chocolate. It does provide lots of richness, but thanks to its mild flavor the presence of avocado will go unnoticed. That’s why many dessert recipes like avocado chocolate mousse list it as a main ingredient.

I promise, you will love this recipe.

Ingredients and substitutes

This is a simple avocado brownie recipe with 3 ingredients. You only need ripe avocados, cocoa powder and maple syrup. Of course you can add some chocolate chips, chopped walnuts or pecans and a pinch of salt for more flavor. I have included the complete list of ingredients with quantities in the recipe card down below. But for the moment, here are some details.

  • Ripe avocados. You’ll need 2 ripe avocados of medium size, I recommend Hass avocados. To check for the best level of ripeness, gently press the fruit with your fingers. The ideal avocados are slightly soft to the touch and green inside. But not too soft, or they may be rotten.
  • Cocoa powder. Use unsweetened cocoa powder, I like baking cocoa. You can replace it with raw cocoa powder, cacao powder or Dutch cocoa powder.
  • Maple syrup. Pure maple syrup sweetens the brownies without using refined sugar. Replace with honey, agave syrup, or with 1/3 cup of granulated sweetener for keto avocado brownies.

The basic recipe for flourless brownies has just 3 ingredients. But this doesn’t mean you can’t add more. Chocolate chips, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, or a pinch of salt…Feel free to customize this recipe to your likings.

How to make avocado brownies with 3 ingredients

Making healthy avocado brownies with 3 ingredients is very simple, it won’t require more than 25 minutes. The good news is, you can make them straight in a blender or in a bowl, if you don’t have a blender. Here are more details.

Step 1 – Prepare for baking. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees °F (or 180 degrees °C) and line a 8×4 brownie pan with parchment paper. As an alternative you can also grease it very well with butter or oil.

Step 2 – Prepare the avocado brownie batter. Add 2 seedless avocados, 1/2 cup of cocoa powder and 1/4 cup of maple syrup to a blender or to a food processor. Blend until it reaches a smooth consistency free of lumps.

No blender? No problem! If you don’t have a blender, add the avocados to a bowl and mash them with a fork. You should get a very smooth mixture free of lumps or pieces of avocado. Once you are done, add the cocoa powder and the maple syrup, then mix until smooth.

Step 2 – Bake brownies. Transfer the avocado batter to your prepared brownie pan and bake in hot oven of 20 to 25 minutes. Do not over-bake. The brownies are ready when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Chef tip. After baking, let the dessert cool for at least 30 minutes. Ideally, refrigerate it overnight. The taste and texture of chocolate brownies with avocado improves as they cool, especially if they are cold from the fridge.

Success tips

  • Mash the avocados thoroughly until smooth, using either a blender or a fork. Ensure there are no lumps or pieces remaining.
  • If your brownie batter turns out too wet and runny, add a couple of tablespoons of your favorite flour (I recommend almond flour) to achieve a smoother consistency. This variation may occur due to the differing moisture content in avocados of various sizes.
  • Level up your three-ingredient avocado brownies by incorporating additional ingredients. I suggest adding chopped walnuts, hazelnuts, chocolate chips, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt for extra flavor and texture.
  • Avoid over-baking the avocado brownies to prevent them from becoming dry and tough. Even if they appear slightly undercooked after 25 minutes, don’t worry; brownies tend to firm up as they cool.
  • For the best results, let the brownies cool in the fridge overnight before serving. This will make them fudgier and intensify their flavors.

Keto avocado brownies

If you follow a low carb diet, here is how to make these 3 ingredient brownies keto. It is very simple, you only need to replace the maple syrup with ether:

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) of sugar-free maple syrup or;
  • 1/3 cup (65 grams) of keto granulated sweetener such as monk fruit, erythritol or allulose.

The remaining ingredients – avocados and cocoa powder – do not require any adaptation. Both are already poor in carbs and sugars.

How to store and freeze avocado brownies

After baking, let the avocado brownies cool at room temperature. Then seal in an airtight food container and store at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also refrigerate them for up to 5 days.

For a longer storage, freeze 3 ingredient avocado brownies in an airtight food container or in zipping bags for up to 3 months. Before serving, reheat in hot oven for a couple of minutes.
